Yesterday Allie wanted to paint her nails. Hands and feet. She asked me to help her. Red for the fingers, and a metallic brown for the toes. She laughed when she finished and said, "Now you do mine, daddy!"
Today she wants to wear her halloween costume through the house. It’s Pegasus - she climbs into a horse kind of thing, her legs move as normal but four horse legs hang too, and a tail and Pegasus's head and wings. Pink, of course. The colour of choice of all nine year-old girls. She plays and makes horse sounds.
I have to do a bit of grocery shopping. She wants to come, dressed as she is. I look at her. My mouth cringed up on one side. She smiles. “Come on,” I say.
She gallops down the aisles. I walk down the aisles. We look for horse food down the pet aisle and that's funny. One old lady looks at her and says, “Aren’t you a little old to be wearing that today?”
Allie looks up at me, a little confused. I reply to grandma, “I got her down aisle 2. She was the oldest one there. You can get a younger one yourself if that makes you feel better.”
Then I notice my sandals and toe nails. I go from a caring dad to a pervert in five seconds. We finish up and have to go through the self check - nine items, I can't believe I have nine items!
I think the guy who works the self-serve station winks at me, but I won’t swear to it.
